Résumé
Apraclonidine labeling lists MAO inhibitors as a contraindication. Theoretically, altered catecholamine handling could cause blood pressure changes, although ophthalmic exposure is small.
Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples
Apraclonidine and Isocarboxazid are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Apraclonidine belongs to Cardiovascular; Isocarboxazid belongs to Central Nervous System.
Pourquoi elle survient
Mechanism is not firmly established; MAO inhibition may alter catecholamine metabolism and potentiate the systemic effects of the alpha-2 agonist.
Conduite à tenir
Avoid apraclonidine in patients on isocarboxazid and use another intraocular pressure-lowering agent. Follow the labeled contraindication.
