Synthetic vitamin D2 analog that binds the vitamin D receptor (VDR), selectively activating vitamin D responsive pathways; reduces PTH levels by inhibiting PTH synthesis and secretion.

  • Hypercalcemia can cause cardiac arrhythmias and seizures; risk increased with high-dose calcium, thiazides or vitamin D compounds. Monitor serum calcium; reduce dose or discontinue if it occurs.
  • Digitalis toxicity risk increases with hypercalcemia; monitor calcium and patients on digitalis.
  • Adynamic bone disease with increased fracture risk may develop if intact PTH is oversuppressed; monitor PTH.
