Semisynthetic lipopeptide (echinocandin class), inhibits fungal cell wall synthesis

Treatment of candidemia, acute disseminated candidiasis, candida peritonitis and abscesses: 100 mg/day IV infusion x10-47 days (mean 15 days)

- Unknown Insufficient human data. In rabbits, 4 times the human dose caused visceral abnormalities and abortion. US label: may cause fetal harm; advise pregnant women of the risk to the fetus.

- Safe No data in human milk; found in rat milk. LactMed: over 99% protein-bound and poorly absorbed by mouth, so unlikely to reach the infant; it is given IV to young infants. Not a reason to stop breastfeeding.
