Summary

Oral aminolevulinic acid used for visualization in surgery causes transient skin photosensitivity. Sulfonylureas such as tolazamide can also cause photosensitivity reactions in some patients, so the phototoxic risk may be additive in the perioperative period.

What this interaction means in plain words

Aminolevulinic acid and Tolazamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Aminolevulinic acid belongs to Miscellaneous; Tolazamide belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive photosensitizing effects (pharmacodynamic) of protoporphyrin accumulation and sulfonylurea-related photosensitivity.

What to do

Counsel the patient to avoid sunlight and bright indoor light exposure for the period specified in the aminolevulinic acid labeling. Where possible, avoid starting other phototoxic agents in the 24 hours around the procedure and monitor the skin for reactions.
