Summary
Hydroxyzine can add to the sedation and hypotension seen with apomorphine, and both drugs have been linked to QT prolongation. The risk of dizziness, falls and arrhythmia is higher in older patients and those with cardiac disease. Hydroxyzine is also a dopamine-blocking-free antihistamine but may still reduce alertness.
What this interaction means in plain words
Apomorphine and Hydroxyzine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Apomorphine belongs to Central Nervous System; Hydroxyzine belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression, orthostatic hypotension and QT prolongation.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, sedation and ECG in patients with QT risk factors. Use the lowest effective hydroxyzine dose.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
