Summary
Armodafinil may inhibit CYP2C19, which converts clobazam's active metabolite N-desmethylclobazam to inactive forms. Higher metabolite exposure can increase sedation, ataxia and cognitive effects. Armodafinil may also weakly induce CYP3A4 which forms the metabolite, so net effect is variable.
What this interaction means in plain words
Armodafinil and Clobazam can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Armodafinil belongs to Central Nervous System; Clobazam belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Inhibition of CYP2C19 by armodafinil, reducing clearance of N-desmethylclobazam.
What to do
Monitor for sedation, ataxia and seizure control after starting or stopping armodafinil. Reduce the clobazam dose if adverse effects occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
