For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: Moderate

Beta-blockers can mask adrenergic warning symptoms of hypoglycemia (e.g., tachycardia), potentially delaying recognition; overall hypoglycemia risk with SGLT2 monotherapy is low.

Mechanism of action

Beta-1 adrenergic blockade blunts autonomic responses (tachycardia, tremor) to low glucose; may prolong recovery from hypoglycemia.

Clinical management

Educate patients to monitor glucose regularly and recognize non-adrenergic symptoms (sweating, hunger). Increase glucose monitoring after therapy changes. Extra caution if combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
