Summary
Nabumetone can reduce the diuretic and natriuretic response to bumetanide and may blunt its antihypertensive effect. In susceptible patients, such as those who are dehydrated, elderly or have heart failure or renal disease, the combination can also contribute to acute kidney injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bumetanide and Nabumetone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Bumetanide belongs to Cardiovascular; Nabumetone belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAIDs inhibit renal prostaglandin synthesis, which loop diuretics depend on for renal blood flow and natriuresis, causing sodium retention and reduced diuretic efficacy.
What to do
Monitor urine output, weight, blood pressure and serum creatinine, and watch for signs of reduced diuretic response. Increase the diuretic dose if needed or choose a non-NSAID analgesic where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
