Summary
Ozanimod's active metabolites inhibit MAO-B in vitro, and the labeling warns against combining it with drugs that raise norepinephrine or serotonin because of possible hypertensive crisis or serotonin syndrome. Bupropion inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake and can itself raise blood pressure. The risk is mainly predicted from mechanism.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bupropion and Ozanimod can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Bupropion belongs to Central Nervous System; Ozanimod belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive increase in noradrenergic and dopaminergic activity via reuptake inhibition (bupropion) and MAO-B inhibition by ozanimod metabolites.
What to do
Avoid the combination where feasible; if both are needed, monitor blood pressure and heart rate and watch for signs of serotonin toxicity or hypertensive reaction.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
