Summary
Antibiotics that disrupt gut flora can raise digoxin levels in patients whose digoxin is partly inactivated by intestinal bacteria such as Eggerthella lenta. For cefpodoxime this is a theoretical effect and is probably small.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefpodoxime and Digoxin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefpodoxime belongs to Anti Bacterial; Digoxin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Possible reduced bacterial inactivation of digoxin in the gut, increasing its absorbed amount.
What to do
Watch for digoxin toxicity symptoms and consider checking digoxin level if the patient is on a narrow margin or develops nausea or arrhythmia.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
