Summary
Ticlopidine inhibits CYP2C9 (and CYP2C19), the main pathway for celecoxib clearance, so celecoxib exposure may increase. This could raise the likelihood of dose-related NSAID adverse effects such as gastrointestinal, renal or cardiovascular events. The combination also adds bleeding risk because ticlopidine impairs platelet function.
What this interaction means in plain words
Celecoxib and Ticlopidine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Celecoxib belongs to Musculoskeletal; Ticlopidine belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Ticlopidine inhibits CYP2C9-mediated metabolism of celecoxib, and both drugs have additive effects on bleeding risk.
What to do
Use the lowest effective celecoxib dose and monitor for GI bleeding and other NSAID toxicity. Consider an alternative analgesic if the patient has high bleeding risk.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
