Summary

Clarithromycin markedly increases ubrogepant exposure by inhibiting CYP3A4. Ubrogepant labeling contraindicates concurrent strong CYP3A4 inhibitors because of the risk of increased adverse effects such as nausea and somnolence.

What this interaction means in plain words

Clarithromycin and Ubrogepant are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Clarithromycin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Ubrogepant belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Strong CYP3A4 inhibition reduces ubrogepant metabolism, raising systemic concentrations.

What to do

Do not co-administer; use an alternative acute migraine therapy during the clarithromycin course or an alternative antibiotic.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
