Summary

Procarbazine has MAO-inhibiting activity, and dexmethylphenidate releases and blocks reuptake of catecholamines. The combination can provoke a hypertensive crisis with severe headache, arrhythmia, and risk of intracranial haemorrhage.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dexmethylphenidate and Procarbazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Dexmethylphenidate belongs to Central Nervous System; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition increases stores of catecholamines, so the sympathomimetic effects of the stimulant are exaggerated.

What to do

Do not use together or within 14 days of stopping procarbazine. Choose a non-stimulant alternative where needed.

What to ask your pharmacist
