Summary
Pentamidine, particularly when given intravenously, can prolong the QT interval and cause torsades de pointes. Combined with dronedarone the arrhythmia risk is substantially increased.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dronedarone and Pentamidine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Dronedarone belongs to Cardiovascular; Pentamidine belongs to Anti Parasitic.
Why it happens
Additive QT interval prolongation through cardiac repolarization effects.
What to do
Avoid the combination; use an alternative anti-infective or hold dronedarone, with ECG and electrolyte monitoring if unavoidable.
