Summary
The inducing component of lumacaftor/ivacaftor is a strong CYP3A inducer, so combination products lower ensitrelvir levels. Ivacaftor alone is a weak CYP3A substrate with little inducing effect, so the concern applies mainly to lumacaftor-containing regimens. Reduced ensitrelvir exposure may compromise antiviral response.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ensitrelvir and Ivacaftor are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Ensitrelvir belongs to Anti Virals; Ivacaftor belongs to Miscellaneous.
Why it happens
Lumacaftor (co-formulated with ivacaftor) induces CYP3A, increasing ensitrelvir clearance.
What to do
Avoid ensitrelvir in patients taking lumacaftor/ivacaftor and choose an alternative antiviral. Ivacaftor monotherapy does not carry this induction concern but check the exact product.
