Summary
Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic that releases noradrenaline, while mirtazapine blocks presynaptic alpha-2 receptors and increases noradrenergic transmission. The combination might increase blood pressure or heart rate, but clinically significant reactions are uncommon. Ephedrine's stimulant effect may also partly offset mirtazapine sedation.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ephedrine and Mirtazapine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ephedrine belongs to Cardiovascular; Mirtazapine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive noradrenergic effects from indirect sympathomimetic action and alpha-2 receptor blockade.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and heart rate when ephedrine is used with mirtazapine, particularly in patients with cardiovascular disease. Reduce the ephedrine dose if an exaggerated pressor response occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
