Summary
Pretomanid inhibits the renal organic anion transporter 3 in vitro, and furosemide is a substrate of this transporter. Reduced tubular secretion could raise furosemide exposure, although the net effect on diuresis has not been clinically characterised.
What this interaction means in plain words
Furosemide and Pretomanid have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular; Pretomanid belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Inhibition of OAT3-mediated renal tubular secretion of furosemide by pretomanid.
What to do
Monitor diuretic response, blood pressure, renal function and electrolytes when starting pretomanid. Reduce the furosemide dose if signs of excessive effect appear.
