Summary
Thiazide diuretics may worsen glucose tolerance and partially offset the glucose-lowering effect of liraglutide. Gastrointestinal fluid losses from liraglutide combined with a diuretic may also contribute to dehydration and kidney injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide and Liraglutide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Liraglutide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Thiazides reduce insulin sensitivity and secretion, opposing the glucose-lowering action of liraglutide.
What to do
Monitor glycemic control when the thiazide is started, stopped or changed, and adjust antidiabetic therapy if needed. Advise hydration and check renal function if vomiting or diarrhea occurs.
