Summary
Thiazide-type diuretics such as metolazone can worsen glucose tolerance and raise blood glucose. This may partly offset the glucose-lowering effect of liraglutide, particularly at the start of diuretic therapy or after a dose increase.
What this interaction means in plain words
Liraglutide and Metolazone have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Liraglutide belongs to Endocrine; Metolazone belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism: thiazide-induced hypokalemia and reduced insulin sensitivity or secretion oppose the glycemic action of liraglutide.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose and HbA1c when metolazone is started, stopped or its dose changed, and adjust antidiabetic therapy if control worsens. Correct hypokalemia if present.
