Summary
Pegvisomant blocks growth hormone receptors, which can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in acromegaly. When given with liraglutide, glucose lowering may be greater than expected, raising the chance of hypoglycemia, particularly if other antidiabetic drugs are also used.
What this interaction means in plain words
Liraglutide and Pegvisomant can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Liraglutide belongs to Endocrine; Pegvisomant belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic additive glucose lowering through improved insulin sensitivity from growth hormone receptor blockade on top of GLP-1 receptor agonism.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose when pegvisomant is started or its dose changed. Reduce doses of concurrent insulin or sulfonylureas if hypoglycemia occurs.
