Summary
Voriconazole inhibits CYP3A4, the main enzyme clearing methylprednisolone, so systemic corticosteroid exposure rises. This can produce stronger glucocorticoid effects such as hyperglycemia, fluid retention, infection risk and adrenal suppression.
What this interaction means in plain words
Methylprednisolone and Voriconazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Methylprednisolone belongs to Endocrine; Voriconazole belongs to Anti Fungals.
Why it happens
Voriconazole inhibits CYP3A4-mediated metabolism of methylprednisolone, reducing its clearance.
What to do
Monitor for corticosteroid excess (glucose, blood pressure, edema, infection) and consider reducing the methylprednisolone dose during combined use. Watch for adrenal suppression when either drug is stopped.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
