Summary
Ozanimod can slow the heart rate and delay AV conduction, and moxifloxacin prolongs the QT interval. Bradycardia increases the risk of torsades de pointes with QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Moxifloxacin and Ozanimod can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Moxifloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Ozanimod belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic effect: S1P-mediated bradycardia plus moxifloxacin-induced QT prolongation.
What to do
Avoid starting ozanimod in patients on QT-prolonging drugs unless the benefit outweighs the risk, and obtain cardiology advice and an ECG first. Prefer a non-QT-prolonging antibiotic.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
