Summary
Zoledronic acid lowers serum calcium, and aminoglycosides can cause renal magnesium and calcium wasting, so combined use may produce additive hypocalcemia. With oral neomycin, systemic absorption is low, so the risk is greatest with impaired gut integrity or renal impairment, and zoledronic acid is also nephrotoxic.
What this interaction means in plain words
Neomycin and Zoledronic acid have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Neomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Zoledronic acid belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic lowering of serum calcium and potential additive renal effects.
What to do
Monitor serum calcium, magnesium and renal function when used together, particularly in patients with renal impairment or prolonged neomycin use.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
