Summary

Tipranavir is given with ritonavir, which is a potent CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 inhibitor and also affects P-glycoprotein. Risperidone exposure may therefore rise, increasing sedation, hypotension and extrapyramidal effects.

What this interaction means in plain words

Risperidone and Tipranavir can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Risperidone belongs to Central Nervous System; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Inhibition of CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 (largely via coadministered ritonavir) reducing risperidone clearance.

What to do

Start risperidone at a lower dose and titrate slowly. Monitor for extrapyramidal symptoms, sedation and QT effects.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
