Summary
Solriamfetol increases dopamine and norepinephrine activity, and MAO inhibitors impair breakdown of these amines. This can cause severe hypertension and hypertensive crisis, and solriamfetol labeling contraindicates use with MAO inhibitors.
What this interaction means in plain words
Safinamide and Solriamfetol are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Safinamide belongs to Central Nervous System; Solriamfetol belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition by solriamfetol adds to reduced monoamine degradation from MAO inhibition.
What to do
Avoid concurrent use and do not start solriamfetol within 14 days of stopping an MAO inhibitor. Monitor blood pressure if exposure occurs.
