Summary
Stiripentol is partly metabolized by several CYP enzymes, including CYP3A4, so voriconazole may raise its levels. Stiripentol itself inhibits CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 and may increase voriconazole exposure in turn. Effects may include sedation, ataxia, and azole toxicity.
What this interaction means in plain words
Stiripentol and Voriconazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Stiripentol belongs to Central Nervous System; Voriconazole belongs to Anti Fungals.
Why it happens
Voriconazole inhibits CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 metabolism of stiripentol, and stiripentol may inhibit voriconazole clearance.
What to do
Monitor for sedation, ataxia, and voriconazole adverse effects such as visual and hepatic effects. Consider voriconazole trough monitoring and a stiripentol dose reduction if toxicity appears.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
