Summary

Tedizolid is a weak reversible MAO inhibitor, and with tapentadol it may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome or noradrenergic excess. Clinical studies of tedizolid showed little serotonergic effect, so the risk is probably lower than with linezolid but remains a concern.

What this interaction means in plain words

Tapentadol and Tedizolid can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Tapentadol belongs to Musculoskeletal; Tedizolid belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Weak MAO inhibition by tedizolid adds to tapentadol's serotonergic and noradrenergic reuptake inhibition.

What to do

Avoid if alternatives exist. If both are needed, monitor for signs of serotonin toxicity and blood pressure changes.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
