Summary
Barbiturates can lower disopyramide concentrations, possibly resulting in loss of antiarrhythmic control. Enzyme induction also changes the ratio of disopyramide to its active anticholinergic metabolite.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amobarbital and Disopyramide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System; Disopyramide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Amobarbital induces CYP3A4, increasing disopyramide metabolism.
What to do
Monitor ECG, arrhythmia control and disopyramide levels when starting or stopping amobarbital, and adjust the disopyramide dose as needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
