Summary
Both drugs cause CNS depression, so their combination may increase sedation, impaired coordination, and respiratory depression. Clobazam, through its active metabolite, is also a weak CYP2D6 inhibitor and may raise exposure to CYP2D6 substrates such as chlorpromazine.
What this interaction means in plain words
Chlorpromazine and Clobazam can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Chlorpromazine belongs to Central Nervous System; Clobazam belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression, with weak CYP2D6 inhibition by clobazam that may modestly raise chlorpromazine levels.
What to do
Monitor sedation, respiratory status, and extrapyramidal or hypotensive effects. Reduce the chlorpromazine dose if excess effects occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
