Summary

Thyroid hormones can increase sensitivity to catecholamines and tricyclics may enhance this effect. The combination can raise the risk of tachyarrhythmias and CNS stimulation, particularly with excess thyroid hormone. Tricyclic effect may also be accelerated when thyroid hormone is used for augmentation.

What this interaction means in plain words

Clomipramine and Liothyronine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Clomipramine belongs to Central Nervous System; Liothyronine belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Thyroid hormone increases adrenergic receptor sensitivity, adding to tricyclic noradrenergic and cardiac effects.

What to do

Monitor heart rate, rhythm and thyroid function, and watch for agitation or tremor. Keep thyroid replacement dose at the lowest effective level.
