Summary
Both are 5-HT3 antagonists that prolong the QT interval in a dose-related manner, and they have no rationale for combined use. Using both increases the risk of torsades de pointes without added antiemetic benefit.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dolasetron and Ondansetron can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Dolasetron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Ondansetron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation through blockade of cardiac ion channels, a class effect of 5-HT3 antagonists.
What to do
Avoid using two 5-HT3 antagonists together and use an antiemetic from a different class for breakthrough nausea. Correct potassium and magnesium and monitor the ECG if exposure overlaps.
What to ask your pharmacist
