Summary

Ticlopidine inhibits CYP2C19, which metabolizes etravirine, and may increase etravirine concentrations. Etravirine as an inducer of CYP3A4 may also lower ticlopidine exposure, though ticlopidine is not mainly CYP3A4 dependent.

What this interaction means in plain words

Etravirine and Ticlopidine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Etravirine belongs to Anti Virals; Ticlopidine belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Ticlopidine inhibits CYP2C19 reducing etravirine clearance; etravirine induces CYP enzymes that may increase ticlopidine metabolism.

What to do

Monitor for etravirine adverse effects such as rash and for ticlopidine efficacy and hematologic parameters.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
