Summary
Loop diuretics increase urinary magnesium loss and can cause hypomagnesemia. This can partly offset magnesium supplementation and, when magnesium is given for repletion or eclampsia prophylaxis, may lower the achieved serum level. Electrolyte disturbances may also raise arrhythmia risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Furosemide and Magnesium sulphate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular; Magnesium sulphate belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Furosemide inhibits Na-K-2Cl transport in the thick ascending limb, reducing paracellular magnesium reabsorption and increasing renal excretion.
What to do
Monitor serum magnesium, potassium and calcium during combined use and adjust magnesium dosing to the measured level. Replace magnesium as needed in patients on long-term loop diuretics.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
