Summary

Gepirone prolongs the QT interval and indacaterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist, can also affect QTc and cause tachycardia and hypokalemia. Used together they may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmias including torsades de pointes.

What this interaction means in plain words

Gepirone and Indacaterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Gepirone belongs to Central Nervous System; Indacaterol belongs to Respiratory.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QTc prolongation through pharmacodynamic effects, with possible beta-agonist-induced hypokalemia.

What to do

Obtain a baseline ECG and monitor QTc and serum potassium and magnesium during combined use. Correct electrolyte abnormalities and avoid the combination in patients with congenital long QT syndrome or other QT risk factors.

What to ask your pharmacist
