Summary
Tedizolid has weak MAO-inhibiting activity and mirtazapine enhances serotonergic and noradrenergic transmission. The combination could in theory precipitate serotonin syndrome. Studies in animals and healthy volunteers showed little serotonergic effect with tedizolid, and clinical experience is limited.
What this interaction means in plain words
Mirtazapine and Tedizolid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Mirtazapine belongs to Central Nervous System; Tedizolid belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Additive serotonergic activity from weak reversible MAO inhibition by tedizolid and enhanced monoamine transmission from mirtazapine.
What to do
Where possible choose a non-serotonergic antibiotic. If co-prescribed, monitor for neuromuscular excitability, hyperthermia and mental status changes and stop one agent if serotonin toxicity is suspected.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
