Summary
Ritonavir is a strong CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein inhibitor and can markedly raise silodosin exposure. This may lead to severe orthostatic hypotension and syncope.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ritonavir and Silodosin are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Ritonavir belongs to Anti Virals; Silodosin belongs to Genitourinary.
Why it happens
Ritonavir inhibits CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, reducing silodosin metabolism and efflux.
What to do
Do not combine; select a different therapy for urinary symptoms or withhold silodosin during ritonavir treatment.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
