Summary

Oral antibiotics can suppress Eubacterium lentum in the gut, which normally inactivates part of the digoxin dose. In a minority of patients this raises digoxin exposure. Cefpirome is available only as a parenteral agent, so the interaction is largely theoretical.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cefpirome and Digoxin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Cefpirome belongs to Anti Bacterial; Digoxin belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Theoretical reduction of gut flora that metabolize digoxin, increasing its bioavailability; unlikely with a parenteral cephalosporin.

What to do

No routine action is needed; check digoxin levels and watch for toxicity symptoms if unexplained nausea or arrhythmia develops during antibiotic therapy.
