Summary
Thyroid hormone replacement increases metabolic rate and digoxin clearance and volume of distribution changes, which can lower digoxin levels and reduce effect in patients who were previously hypothyroid. Correcting hypothyroidism may thus require digoxin dose adjustment.
What this interaction means in plain words
Digoxin and Liothyronine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Digoxin belongs to Cardiovascular; Liothyronine belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Restoration of euthyroid state increases digoxin clearance and distribution, lowering serum concentrations; exact mechanism is not fully defined.
What to do
Monitor digoxin concentrations and heart rate/clinical response when liothyronine is started or its dose changed, and raise the digoxin dose if needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
