Summary
Both drugs can prolong the QT interval, and giving them together raises the chance of torsades de pointes and other serious ventricular arrhythmias. Risk is greater with electrolyte disturbances, bradycardia or underlying heart disease.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dolasetron and Pentamidine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Dolasetron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Pentamidine belongs to Anti Parasitic.
Why it happens
Additive delayed cardiac repolarization through blockade of cardiac potassium channels.
What to do
Use a non-QT-prolonging antiemetic such as a corticosteroid or an alternative if possible. If unavoidable, correct potassium and magnesium first and monitor the ECG.
What to ask your pharmacist
