Summary
Pentamidine can damage pancreatic beta cells, causing an initial insulin release with hypoglycemia that may later be followed by hyperglycemia or diabetes. In a patient on insulin, glucose control may therefore become unpredictable during and after pentamidine treatment.
What this interaction means in plain words
Insulin degludec-insulin aspart and Pentamidine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Insulin degludec-insulin aspart belongs to Endocrine; Pentamidine belongs to Anti Parasitic.
Why it happens
Pentamidine is toxic to pancreatic beta cells, causing early insulin release and later insulin deficiency.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose closely during and for some time after pentamidine therapy. Reduce insulin if hypoglycemia occurs and increase it if hyperglycemia develops.
