Summary
Nevirapine induces hepatic enzymes and could in theory lower montelukast exposure. Because montelukast has a wide therapeutic margin and is cleared mainly by CYP2C8 and CYP2C9, any loss of effect is likely small.
What this interaction means in plain words
Montelukast and Nevirapine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Montelukast belongs to Respiratory; Nevirapine belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Nevirapine induces CYP3A4 and CYP2B6, which may modestly increase montelukast metabolism.
What to do
No dose change is needed routinely. Check asthma or rhinitis control if symptoms worsen after nevirapine is started.
